GALLERY: Trenton Psychiatric Hospital

Trenton Psychiatric Hospital (originally known as the New Jersey State Lunatic Asylum) was founded by Dorothea Dix in 1848 and is still operational today. Parts of it are abandoned, hence these photos, but out of respect for the current patients and staff, I highly discourage exploring there.  Trenton’s unfortunate claim to fame is being the asylum where Dr. Henry Cotton (medical director from 1907-1930) removed patients’ teeth and organs, believing mental illness was caused by […read more…]

Photo Gallery: Hudson River State Hospital

2021: Large parts of the campus have been demolished and/or remodeled and are now part of a shopping plaza. As far as I know, the Kirkbride still stands, although it’s boarded up and severely damaged by fire.  2018 update: In April 2018, the main building suffered a massive fire. Arson is suspected. The current property owners had recently announced they were reneging on their promise to try to save the Kirkbride. Demolition would have been costly, and the owners may […read more…]

White Lake Mansion House

The White Lake Mansion House is very easy to find, it’s right on CR 117 in Bethel, NY.  It is supposedly the oldest still standing hotel in the Catskills.
